Whether you are returning to the piano after a long break or playing for the first time, our adult programme offers structured, individual tuition without the assumptions of childhood music education.
Our adult pupils come from many different backgrounds. Some have previous musical experience; others are sitting at the piano for the first time. What they share is a serious interest in learning.
Lessons are shaped around your experience, musical interests and the time you realistically have available. Repertoire can range from classical to contemporary music, while technique, theory and reading are introduced as they become relevant to what you are playing.
There is no obligation to take examinations or perform. For those who wish to, examinations can provide useful milestones and pupils are invited to take part in our performances in partnership with Blüthner Piano Centre.
Learning as an adult
Adults often want to understand why something works rather than simply being told what to do. We consider that an advantage.
Understanding is therefore built into the lesson: how a passage is constructed, how a movement works, what you are hearing and, importantly, how to continue working independently when you return to the piano at home.
Returning Pianists
For those returning to the piano after time away, lessons can focus on refreshing technique and musical knowledge, gradually rebuilding confidence at the instrument without unnecessarily starting again from the beginning.
Familiar repertoire can be revisited alongside new music, with the aim of rediscovering the pleasure of playing the piano.
Whatever the starting point, the aim is the same: to make meaningful progress while enjoying the process of learning music.
